About Us

Uncle Buck's is a small in-home cattery located in Canton, Massachusetts.

CFF registered.  FeLV & FIV negative.

Our goal in breeding is to maintain the natural look and size of the Maine Coon cat while ensuring their loving and affectionate "doglike" temperaments.  Our cats are our family and share our home.  Our kittens are raised "underfoot" and are showered with lots of love and attention.  Our cats/kittens have close veterinary supervision including all necessary vaccinations, testings & routine examinations. We choose to be a closed cattery to reduce the health risks of our cats and their home environment.

WHO IS UNCLE BUCK?

Uncle Buck is a family cat who was originally named Yoda.  He is neither a purebred nor a Maine Coon.  At only 1 year old, like John Candy in the movie "Uncle Buck",  he protected, loved and cared for our original breeding pair of Maine Coons as if they were his own.  He groomed Appleface & Baby Girl,  he comforted them, played with them and patiently allowed them to play & climb all over him.

One day when a screen accidentally fell out of a window, he positioned himself in front of the window,  guarding and gently batting the curious kittens away from the opening, keeping them safe until help arrived & the screen was securely put back in place.  That day ,in 2002 ,Yoda was renamed Uncle Buck and the official name of the cattery was decided. Uncle Buck still patiently  and carefully watches over all the cats and litters of kittens in the cattery.

ABOUT THE MAINE COON CAT

Maine Coons are known as the "gentle giants" and possess above-average intelligence, making them relatively easy to train. They are known for being loyal to their family and cautious—albeit not mean—around strangers, but are independent and not clingy. The Maine Coon is generally not known for being a "lap cat" but their loving nature and gentle disposition makes the breed relaxed around dogs, other cats, and children. They are playful throughout their lives, with males tending to be aloof and females generally possessing more dignity. Many Maine Coons have a fascination with water and some theorize that this personality trait comes from their ancestors, who were aboard ships for much of their lives.

Maine Coon Cats are massive, tall, big-boned, with a broad chest and a long rectangular body. It is one of the largest of the domestic breeds. Everything about the Maine Coon Cat points to its adaptation to a harsh climate. Their fur is 2-3 inches long and flowing, with a silky texture. The hair is longer on the stomach, ruff and britches, forming a lion-like mane. The coat is water-resistant and protects against cold and snow. The long bushy tail helps to save warmth when the cat curls up to sleep
.

Maine Coons have several physical adaptations for survival in harsh winter climates. Their dense water-resistant fur is longer and shaggier on their underside and rear for extra protection when they are on top of wet surfaces or snow. Their long and bushy raccoon-like tail is resistant to sinking in snow, and can be curled around their face and shoulders for warmth and protection from wind and blowing snow. Large paws, and especially the extra-large paws of polydactyl Maine Coons, facilitate walking on snow and are often compared to snowshoes. Long tufts of fur growing between their toes help keep the toes warm and further aid walking on snow by giving the paws additional structure without significant extra weight. Heavily furred ears with extra long tufts of fur growing from inside help keep their ears warm.

Maine Coon Cats have excellent sight and hearing. The large round eyes of purebred Maine Coons are set at a slightly oblique angle. The breed is also known for its special voices: Maine Coon Cats rarely meow, but use a loud chirping trill for everything from courting to invitation for play.

Throughout the history of the breed there has been no restriction on the color, with the exception of the Siamese pattern. As a result, a wide range of colors and patterns of Maine Coon Cats are bred. Among them are brown classic tabby, red classic tabby, silver tabby, blue classic tabby, tortoiseshell, brown-patched classic, black and white, and etc. All eye colors are permissible in Maine Coon Cats (blue and odd eyes are permissible in white cats only).
